Complaint Patterns
Complaint patterns
Individual complaints are anecdotes. Repeated complaints with the same shape are a pattern — and a pattern is what a regulator, a journalist or a court will actually act on. These are the eight that recur.
Security deposit withheld or never returned
The most frequently documented complaint. Tenants report that after check-out the deposit is not returned within the stated window, and that each enquiry produces a new prerequisite rather than a payment.
15 documented reports → CriticalUnilateral deductions for disputed 'damage'
Deductions applied without prior notice or agreed evidence, for items tenants dispute as normal wear. A published Indonesian complaint documents a deduction justified as 'wall stains' (noda tembok).
7 documented reports → HighThe 'waiting for billing confirmation' stall
Enquiries answered with an indefinite 'awaiting the building's billing statement'. Complainants note building management typically issues statements on a fixed monthly date, making an open-ended delay hard to justify.
3 documented reports → HighRefund blocked over booking/bank name mismatch
Refunds refused or delayed because the bank account name differs from the booking account name — a condition tenants report was not made clear at the time of booking or payment.
1 documented reports → HighProperty condition on arrival
Reports of units delivered in a condition materially below the listing, including pest infestation, visible mould, and non-functioning appliances, with repairs reported as slow or unresolved.
3 documented reports → HighUnilateral cancellation and room changes
Bookings cancelled or altered by the platform close to arrival, in at least one published account only hours beforehand, leaving tenants to find accommodation at short notice.
1 documented reports → MediumPenalty interest and unexpected charges
Charges tenants report as disproportionate or not clearly disclosed at booking, including a published account of interest charged at a stated 2% per day.
6 documented reports → MediumCustomer service unresponsive at the decisive moment
Support described as slow or circular precisely when money is in dispute, including refusal to confirm in writing at check-out that a unit was returned in acceptable condition.
13 documented reports → CriticalCharges raised after check-out ("post charge")
Charges levied days or weeks after a guest has left and the unit has been re-let, for damage the guest disputes. Distinct from a deduction agreed at inspection: by the time the claim arrives the guest can no longer inspect the unit or rebut it.
9 documented reports → HighProperty owners charged and stonewalled
A second group of complainants: the landlords whose units Travelio manages. Published letters describe repair costs charged to owners for damage owners say was not their fault, unverified water-bill refunds, rental agreements delivered without the owner’s signature, and owner-relations staff who answer only with standard procedure.
9 documented reports → HighUnit materially different from the listing
Guests arriving to find the unit substantially unlike the photographs and description they booked from, and then finding the refund route effectively closed.
1 documented reports → MediumRefund converted into a voucher
Money owed returned as credit for future bookings with the same company rather than as cash to the account it came from — which is not a refund, and locks the complainant into transacting again.
